Française des jeux, also known as FDJ since 2009, is a French public limited company founded in 1976, following the launch of the national Loto lottery in 1976. At the time, 72% of its capital was held by the French State, which gave it a monopoly on lottery and sports betting games in mainland France, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and La Réunion, as well as Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French Polynesia and the Principality of Monaco, under the supervision of the Budget Minister.

Since the entry into force of Law no. 2010-476 of 12 May 2010, relating to the opening up to competition and the regulation of the online gambling sector, its online betting activities have been open to competition. In 2018, the government announced plans to open up its capital6. The State put its shares up for sale in November 2019, representing 52% of the capital.
