3Com, founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, was a company that specialised in networking equipment, which ceased trading in 2010. Its acronym stands for Computers, Communication and Compatibility.
Originally specialising in network adapters, 3Com developed a number of communication solutions for computer systems that enabled it to move into the server, workstation and personal computer markets. Threatened with a takeover in 1986, the company turned the situation around by making a number of acquisitions between 1987 and 2000. In particular, it merged with modem specialist U.S. Robotics, which had bought Palm, Inc. in 1995.
